Thermal Performance Indicator The Thermal Performance Indicator is designed to alert firefighters in a timely fashion to excessive heat exposure. Previous research conducted by the CFSRD has provided new information with regard to the gear dynamics and the potentially dangerous increase in temperature that continues after a firefighter has exited the hostile environment. Duals sensors placed on the gear outer surface sample environmental conditions every second. Processors then predict five scenarios based on the sampled data using complex algorithms that have been validated in a laboratory setting. This information is then communicated to the firefighter through the Head's Up Display in much the same manner as air supply is communicated.
