Emergency Medicine

CPR/AED - Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Automatic External Defibrillation
The course is designed to teach the basic techniques of adult CPR and use of an AED. Students will also be taught the use of barrier devices in CPR and giving first aid for choking. This course follows the AHA guidelines for performing CPR and using an AED. Upon successful completion of national cognitive and skills evaluation in accordance with the curriculum of the American Heart Association, students are issued a Heartsaver AED pocket card.

First Responder
The 42 hour training program is presented in 5 days of instruction and is designed to give the participant the knowledge and skills to perform patient assessment, bleeding control and bandaging, fracture management, medical emergency management, CPR, automatic external defibrillator, and oxygen administration. It is intended for personnel who may respond to emergency medical incidents. Included in the course is a final examination, which upon successful completion certifies the participant as a Maryland First Responder for three years.

First Responder Refresher
The 15 hour training program is presented in two days of instruction and offers approved continuing education for the purpose of re-certification as a Maryland First Responder. The program is open to all personnel currently certified and due for re-certification as a Maryland First Responder

Emergency Medical Technician - Basic
The 131 hour training program is presented in three full weeks of instruction and is designed to give the participant the knowledge and skills to perform patient assessment, bleeding control and bandaging, shock management, fracture management, CPR, automatic external defibrillation, oxygen administration, medical emergency management, patient assisted medications, spinal immobilization, patient movement and transportation. State of Maryland certification requirements include field internships, written and practical examination, and affiliation with an approved Basic Life Support or Advanced Life Support company. Participants may also request National Registry Certification for an additional fee.

Emergency Medical Technician - Basic Refresher
The 24 hour training program is presented in three days of instruction and offers approved continuing education for the purpose of re-certification as a Maryland Emergency Medical Technician - Basic. The program is open to all personnel currently certified and due for re-certification as a Maryland Emergency Medical Technician – Basic.
