Lithium-Ion Battery Emergencies and Alternative Fuels

Instructional Hours: 6.00

The proliferation of alternative fuels poses unique challenges to the fire service. As in the past, the fire service needs to adapt and evolve to meet the changing risks.

Lithium-ion batteries are not only found in electric/hybrid vehicles, but they are powering things like cell phones, laptops, and e-mobility devices. Electric companies are now using large battery storage systems to help balance the load on the electrical grid. These devices are everywhere and so are their fire risks.

Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), and hydrogen are also being used to power cars, buses, garbage trucks, and semis. Knowing what to do and not do, will allow you to manage these incidents effectively.

This 6-hour course provides information to help firefighters stay safe by learning the latest suppression and rescue techniques for batteries and alternative fuels. Tactics and best practices are still being discussed and revised as ongoing research is completed and more real-world experiences are collected and evaluated.
