Decision Making

Do you know what knowledge and skills are required before an incident?

Decision making includes the ability to recognize situations as they are presented and to determine a course of action based on the skill and knowledge level of the individual. Do you know what knowledge and skills are required before an incident? In a 1988 study, it was found that fire ground commanders only focus on one option to change the situation in an incident. And if this option does not work, it becomes more difficult to make successful decisions. This holds true for all commanders, managers, and leaders, regardless of the emergency! At the ICSC and Mobile Lab we identify many options for a given situation to improve your level of knowledge and situational awareness. This enhances the individual’s capability to choose from various “options” given similar situations. Better decision-making skills will improve the outcome of the incident! You will learn tactical decision making based on fire behavior/dynamics, command during maydays, and naturalistic decision making or critical thinking which is using decision making tactics based on what works and what does not work.
