Scenarios: Commercial Buildings

Commercial buildings are a difficult situation that departments don’t handle on a regular basis.

Commercial buildings are a difficult situation that departments do not handle on a regular basis. Many officers have not been trained on how to fight fire in these facilities. Commanding a commercial fire incident requires an enhanced command organization. These command changes are discussed in detail during the simulations. Commercial fire simulations teach the lessons learned from NIOSH investigations and prior experiences of fire ground commanders. These skills are based on research data from various incidents including failure to: complete and obtain successful size-up information, recognize how the fire is spreading in the structure, and understand how flow paths affect the safety of civilians and firefighters. Crew resource management on a commercial fire is a critical decision-making element that is discussed. When considering commercial buildings in your community, the ICSC instructors will address command, tactics, and safety concerns for combating these fires. Analytical data from previous incidents is paramount in our simulation lab. Discussion on strip malls, furniture stores, restaurants, warehouses, office buildings, and churches are covered. We call many of these types of occupancies “losers”. Many fire departments try to fight commercial buildings like they are fighting a dwelling. Your mindset will change after learning from our simulation instructors who have years of experience dealing with commercial buildings. Failure to learn and remember previous incidents could be catastrophic to your department in the future.
